This identity was further evident in Hamilton Carhartt’s behaviour. Although this was a time of such practice as child labour, Carhartt did not allow this and although they may well have incurred higher production costs, they stuck by their ethics and had the conviction to be an equal opportunities employer.
What sets Carhartt apart is their commitment to the ‘Work Hard' – 'Play Hard’ ethic, which they have undoubtedbly maintained for over 121 years. Expanding the line from the traditional pieces, of which many still exist, to the vast present day range, Carhartt now offers an extensive range of Carhartt Jackets, Coats, Jeans, Carhartt Trousers along with an wide range of modern yet rugged and durable Carhartt Sweatshirts and T-shirts. Carhartt Workwear | Stand the test of time
Carhartt’s tough, durable construction became ever apparent at the outbreak of World War 1. Carhartt was chosen to supply uniforms to the U.S Army as troops were deployed to Europe. Carhartt had now made the transformation from being a company of a few employees to supplying the US Army.
Carhartt has survived hard times such as ‘World War 1’ and ‘The Great Depression’. Their commitment to weather the storm and survive these hard times is at the forefront of the brands ‘Work Hard’ ethic. The brand campaigned and endeavoured to restore values to the American people after the war and provide quality, hard-wearing work clothes to the American workers. Hamilton and his son Wylie established the ‘Back to Land’ campaign which led to the joint opening of the Irvine, Kentucky operations with the local towns people. The manufacturing offices are still based there today.
The founding father of Carhartt survived to see his company grow from a few employees in 1889 into an operation of 17 plants and 3 mills throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Hamilton Carhartt passed away in 1937 at the age of 82. Today his company remains family owned and also retains it’s commitment to providing ‘Best-In-Class’ Apparel for the worker.
“I believe that when a man wears an article that I manufacture, his self-respect is increased because he knows that it is made by an honest manufacturer, who is honest with his employees” – Hamilton Carhartt.
